De Carolina Reaper nam aanvankelijk de eerste plaats in voor World's Hottest Chilli in 2013, toegekend door Guinness World Records. De ontwikkelaar (Smokin' Ed' van Puckerbutt Pepper Company) diende echter een aanvraag in om de Carolina Reaper opnieuw te laten testen als 's werelds heetste vanwege recente pogingen om het record te verbeteren. Dit resulteerde in een gloednieuw wereldrecord voor de chili, met een SHU van 1,6 m (Scoville Heat Units) en een piekhitte van 2,2 m SHU .
